Transcutaneous (through the skin) Electrical Nerve Stimulation, also known as T.E.N.S., is a non-invasive, non-addictive form of therapy used to relieve pain. Unlike medication, T.E.N.S. does not cause nausea, drowsiness or many of the other side effects associated with strong analgesics.
A T.E.N.S unit is a battery-powered device that works by sending electrical impulses through electrodes placed on or near the painful site. These impulses are felt as a tingling sensation on the skin. The impulses act to stimulate the body's own natural defense system against pain by exercising muscles to improve local circulation and by the generation of heat due to their effect on the tissues resulting in the release of endorphins, which are the body's own natural pain relieving hormones.
Increased endorphin production, raises the threshold of pain perception and acts to relieve both acute and chronic pain, relieve muscle stiffness and improve mobility. Nerve fibers also stimulated by the electrical impulses blocking the transmission of pain messages to and from the brain, as explained by the Gate Theory of Pain Control.
